Note: From "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon" by H.K. Hines, 1893 Dr. G.W. Goucher of Amity, Yam Hill county, Oregon, is one of the oldest practicing physicians of this county and has, by a life of devotion to his practice and uniform kindness of heart, endeared himself to the people of this community. He was born in West Virginia, August 26, 1820, and is of French ancestry, who came to the Old Dominion previous to the Revolution. His father, William Goucher, was born in Rockbridge county, Virginia, and was a soldier in the war of 1812. He married Miss Sarah Casto in Greenbrier county of the same State. They had nine children, seven sons and two daughters, all of whom attained maturity. Two are now living, James Goucher, of San Francisco, California, and the subject of oar sketch. In 1825 the father died and five years later the mother also expired, leaving the subject of our sketch an orphan at ten years of age.

John George Goucher, highly possible son. Listed in later census in Ohio as John George Casto, blacksmith. Most likely one of the minor children, orphaned and indentured to a family member of the Casto family.
Additional notes from David Castro: Most if not all Casto genealogies in WV have Sarah Casto, daughter of David Jr. & Margaret Provence, as marrying William George Dec 21 1802. While her siblings are well documented, the union of Sarah & William George seems devoid of information. Nothing else about this couple is known. In a 1966 book 'Marriage records of Harrison county' compiled by Earle Morris contains the following marriage: Dec.21 1802, William Coucher to Sarah Casto. Under her parents it lists Benjamin & Marg. Shreve. In Eileen Vickers book 'Casto Cousins' she states that Benjamin Shreve was an administrator of the will of David Casto Jr who died in Jan. 1802 & was a guardian of David's daughter Sarah, signing her marriage certificate. I think it safe to say that the Casto/George marriage was actually a Casto/Goucher one. At some point years ago someone probably saw the actual marriage record & thought the grooms name was George, the name Goucher being spelled many different ways in those early years. I had a researcher searching for the actual record without any luck. The Earle Morris book was compiled from marriage bonds & in some cases ministers records. William Goucher & family were in Wood county by 1810. William died in 1826. Sarah died in 1835. There were 7 male & 2 female children from this marriage. I know the names of 4 of the sons. They are William, David C, George W, & James. William was gone from Wood co. records by 1840. David died in 1839. Both George W & James married in Wood co. but moved to California during the gold rush of the 1840's. James lived in northern California for the rest of his life, George moved to Oregon were he was a respected doctor. Daughters of the Casto/Goucher union were Jemima & Sarah. That leaves 3 more sons that I cant locate. I think my gr-gr-grandfather John G. Casto was one of them. We know from our recent family DNA project that John G.'s father wasnt a Casto. Its likely after his father died some of the younger children were sent to live with relatives. He may have went to live with some of his mothers Casto relatives, taking their name as his own. Thats my theory anyway. I am sure that some sort of probate document would have been recorded concerning these unknown Goucher children. Whether it still exists is another matter. That will be the focus of my research now.
