A number of maps of NC counties. Each map shows rivers, 18th century
roads, and locations of all the original land owners! For example,
Surry county shows one piece of
property on the Tarrarat River just below FlatShoal Creek for Samuel
Denny 1793, then above Pilot Creek: Samuel Denny 1793, Charles Denny
1784, Azariah Denny 1796, William Denny 1782, and on Pilot Creek
Azariah Denny 1784 and Abraham Vanderpool 1787.

I have no idea what "all of his belongings" consisted of (in the case
of Old Samuel Denny moving from VA to Surry Co., NC in the late
1760's). This data came from Guy Denney's book which was based
mostly on family traditions, interviews, and letters from living
descendants of Samuel Denny. The time frame however, seems to pretty
well match what we've found in the records so far. In our research on
Prodigy, we concluded long ago that Sarah Suddarth was most likely not
the wife of John Denny who died in Bedford Co., VA ca 1755. John was
at least a generation earlier than Sarah. (Per Suddarth researchers,
William Suddarth's children which have known birth dates were born
between 1720 and 1731.) I thought for awhile that perhaps she was the
wife of John Denny, Jr.,
son of the above John. However, I'm now fairly certain that she was
the wife of Samuel Denny, especially after looking at both the
Suddarth lines and the Southard line migration patterns. I'm
convinced that Samuel's wife was definitely NOT a Southard. They
followed an entirely different migration pattern and were not even in
the area where Samuel was (at marrying age) until much later in
time--while the Suddarths were very near. Joel Denny simply got
confused because there were many Southards in Surry Co., NC later on
and he had no way of knowing about the Suddarths/Sudduths/etc. of
Stafford/Albemarle Co., VA. Having said that, there still is no real
proof that Sarah was Samuel Denny's wife;
however I now believe her to be the most likely candidate and will be
pursuing her ancestry in Stafford Co., VA in the near future. Sharon
asked about whether any of Samuel's descendants named a child
Suddarth/Sudduth. So far, this only occurred in the Meeks line, with
one exception. I'm sure you're aware of these but in case others here
aren't, there was a Benjamin Suddeth Meeks (b 1821 to Wm. Meeks, son
of Priddy who married Elizabeth Denny, dau of Old Sam), a Suddeth
Meeks (b ca 1777 to Priddy; m. Winney Smoot), and a later Suddeth
Meeks (b 1832; grandson of the previous Suddeth). I think it's
rather ironic that Joel Denny's (the one who wrote the family history
letter; d 1896) daughter Rosanna Boaz (Denny) Key named a son Joel
Southard Key (b 1878).
This almost had to be on the basis of her father's knowledge/family
history letter which I now believe was definitely in error on this
one. If you look at Priddy Meeks' migration pattern, I think there's
a very logical explanation as to why he picked up the Suddarth/Suddeth
name. We know he was in Goochland Co., VA in 1764-1766, so he would
probably have known the Suddarths/Suddeths personally. However, my
Rebecca (Hooper) Denny was also in the Albemarle Co., VA area (and I
suspect before that her ancestors were also in Stafford Co.) and would
have known the Suddarths there. Either she was not enamored enough
with Sarah to name a child after her or she and her husband Wm. Denny
(son of Samuel) were only using Biblical names and Suddeth/Suddarth
wouldn't qualify. I suspect this was also true of Samuel's other
children and in -laws. An interesting sidelight is that if we're
correct about the Samuel Denny (d 1807 in Wayne Co., KY) being a son
of Old Samuel Denny, three of Samuel's sons named their first child
"At this pint in time we have taced the Denney (Denny) family origins
back to Sir Jeoffrey Denny of London, England, who died in 1375 and
whose famous scion Sir Anthony Denny was friend to King Henry VIII.
The descendants of this family that immigrated to America included
Samuel Denny, born ca. 1715 Suffolk County, Combs, England, who
married ca. 1740 to ______ Southard and lived on Pilot Creek, Surry
County, North Carolina. To this union was born 17 children, one of
which was Azariah Denny who married Sally Wise Felton."
i. Nancy DENNY (no data other than Joel Denny's letter)
ii. John DENNY was born before 1746 in Albemarle County, VA
iii. William DENNY was born before 1747 in Albemarle County, VA.
iv. Benjamin DENNY was born before 1748 in Albemarle County, VA.
Died in TN?.
v. Henry DENNY was born before 1749 in Albemarle County, VA.
vi. Lazarus DENNY was born about 1750 in Albemarle County, VA.
vii. James DENNY was born between 1750/1753 in Albemarle County,
viii. Elizabeth DENNY was born between 1753/1755 in Albemarle
ix. Azariah "Izzy" DENNY was born before 1755 in Albemarle
x. Shared DENNY was born about 1757 in Albemarle County, VA.
Died before 1771.
xi. Keziah "Kerren" DENNY was born about 1759 in Albemarle
xii. Charles DENNY, Sr. was born between 1760/1765 in Albemarle
or Amherst Co. VA.
Other possible sons of Old Samuel are Samuel Denny (d 1807 in Wayne
Co., KY) and Hezekiah Denny (living near the William Denny above in
the 1790 NC Federal Census and not appearing in later records, so far
as I know). I have virtually no information on Old Sam's sons
Benjamin Denny after 1779 or for Henry Denny after 1772; both were in
Surry County, NC at that time.
Note that Joel Denny's letter stated that Samuel had 17 children. If
this is so, he almost certainly had more than one wife. The given
names Sarah and Ann both appear as wives for Old Sam in data I have
seen. Sarah comes from the deed of the William Suddarth below, but
I've never seen any documentation or supportive data for the name Ann.
