Louis Horst was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany in 1807. He and his wife Magaretha (known as, Mary) born in Bayern, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, arrived in Central Texas, via New Orleans, in the 1830's. Louis Horst was a butcher by trade. The Horst Plantation occupied much of the area where the University of Texas is located in Austin, Texas today. The children of were Mr. Louis Horst and Mrs. Margaretha (Mary) Horst were Mr. Charles (Charlie) Horst, Mr. August Horst, Mrs. Louisa Horst Robinson, Mrs. Mathilda Horst Christian, Mrs. Adaline Horst Martinez, Mrs. Mary Horst Cavanaugh and Mrs. Emma Horst Fellman. One of Louis Horst's son's, Charles Horst, born in 1847 in Texas, had four mulatto children by a former slave, Frances Jane Ridge Densmore: Walter Horst, Robert Horst, Ermest Edward Horst, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Horst. Mr. Ernest Edward Horst, Sr. married Miss Sarah Jane Shackelford on October 15, 1889. According to family information, some of Louis Horst's family members attended the funeral of Ernest Edward Horst, Sr., in Austin, Texas 1932. Note: The sister of Ernest Edward(Ed) Horst, Sr., Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Horst Black, had pictures of the children of her Aunt, Mrs. Mathilda Horst Christian: Edward Christian and Maggie Christian. Mrs. Mary Horst Black also had pictures of other members of Louis Horstís family members, such as, a picture of a young girl, age about 10, named Chatilota Horst and a picture of a baby named Jessie Horst. The older generation of our family had contact with all of the Horst family member living in Austin, Travis County, Texas. I am trying to re-connect with this side of our family for information and hopefully pictures of Louis Horst, his wife, Mary Horst. I would especially like to find more information and a picture of the Mr. Charles Horst, the Father of Ed Horst, Sr. and his sister, Mrs. Mary Horst Black.
