Winnie Roberts married my grandfather John HARRIS PhC MPS 1874-1964 of Ystradgynlais. He had been educated at a private Welsh language grammar school Watcyn Wyn School and did his 6th form at Wilsons School then in Camberwell. He lodged in Camberwell with his uncle William Hunter Jr JP &c who was Lord Jersey's Agent. Sadly W Hunter died within weeks of the announcement that he was to be High Sherriff of Glam (so not listed in public documents as such ) . One Hunter son was quite prominent in S Wales -Judge Trevor Hunter QC,Chancellor of the Diocese of Swansea & Brecon.
My grandparents had two surviving sons Dr Theodore Harris a Consultant Psychiatrist in Bradford Yorks and Augustus John Harris a physicist -worked with Sir Edward Appleton before WW2-Dam Buster scientist in WW2-later Road Research Lab.In my cousin Louis Harris' papers (Brig Lewis J Harris -Director of Military Survey -Reserve for Wales &C -he was also in I Zingari -see on !) I came across a photo of Appleton and Louis both as distinguished speakers at the Royal Scottish Geographical Society annual meeting.
John Harris and his brother David lodged with the Hunters (Briton Ferry/Camberwell & Westminster) in Camberwell whilst attending WILSON’s SCHOOL, Camberwell. Mid 1890’s trained in pharmacy with his cousin John Jones at Merton, Surrey.
Ref: "My grandfather attended Watcyn Wynne School in Pontardulais and used Wilsons School as a sixth form college. His education was crossed by developments in secondary education. Watcyn Wynne School was set up as an academy for non conformist ministers-and later transformed into a private grammar school. Wilsons School is an old city grammar school (now relocated to Purley). The development of the County Grammar Schools was the death knell for the small private grammar schools-WW School is no more. My gf was a Freeman of the City-as a member of the Worshipful Co of Spectaclemakers. He trained with his cousin in Pharmacy in Merton and at the School of the Pharmaceutical Soc in London. He also did advanced training with the Public Analyst-I presume as part of his PhC-the higher major exam." [David Harris]
