In 1809 she fornded the Sisters of charity of St. Joseph and established a school in Emmitsburg, Maryland. From these beginnings developed the order's schools, hospitals, and orphanges across the United States. She was declaared Verneralbe by the Vatican in 1959, Bless in 1963, and Sain in 1975
