On Peach Tree Creek, the Raleigh Co. West Virginia area known as Pine Knob, were two Civil War bushwhackings. The one that was successful resulted in the blinding of Leondis Cook a son of Wm Newton (a brother of Pemberton.) The unknown shooter was alleged to have been Andy Gunnoe . Details of that incident are reported in the 7th West Virginia Cavalry Roster .

The other incident was commemorated by an adage heard often around Pine Knob 100 yrs ago. When any kind of " good shot " was made it would be acknowledged by the quote " center ah gawd a hundred yards". That statement was the summation Harrison "Har" Brown had frequently made in concluding his tale of having been the target of an ambush attempt on Peach Tree by Carr Allen . Har reported that while walking along he heard a rifle's misfire snap . Upon spotting a concealed Carr Allen he picked up & let lose a rock that broke the lock off of the rifle & broke Carr's jaw. "Center ah gawd a hundred yards!"

Harrison Brown was the son (or grandson?) of Alexander Brown who settled at Mont Coal & was a son of James & Lucy (Ferrell) Brown of West Fork in Boone Co.

Not far away were three Carr Allens; John Allen Sr 's grandson Carr of Wyoming Co (s/o Carr "Cary" who was killed in 1849) was a teenager during the civil war . He later lived below Peach Tree. Across the hill on Sand Lick was John Sr's brother Carr who died in 1868 . That Carr had a son Wm Carr . The Carr with a sore jaw & a lockless rifle was probably one of the latter two .
