  • Military Service: Served in the Civil War with Co C. 36th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America
  • Note:
According to family legend, John was captured by the Yankees during the Civil War at Walnut Gap in West Virginia. He was told by his captors to "run for it" and he would be let go. He was then shot in the back and killed by one of his captors. The person that shot him was his brother-in-law, Ralph Lafferty. Crap Allen laid for nearly 9 days before civilians happened upon him and buried him.

I understand that John Allen Jr. had fathered the children of his step-daughter Druzilla, and that Druzilla's mother Elizabeth was Ralph Lafferty's sister.

Known as John "Crap" (Crop) Allen supposedly because he had a notched (cropped) ear.

John Allen Jr. "Crap Allen" married Elizabeth Lafferty and lived up on the M.P. McGraw place near the Clens Fork Gap. In 1861, his brother-in-law, Ralph (Rafe) Lafferty with some of Lt. Ferd Neumann's men (Union), captured Allen and took him prisoner down to Chas. Stewarts on Laurel. There Allen was given in charge to Lafferty, Dick Elkins, Owen Smith and John J. Mitchell who were to deliver Allen to the Union Forces in Kanawah Co. as a prisoner of war. In Walnut Gap on the Wyoming Boone Co. line they told Allen that he might run for his life. But as he started to do so, Lafferty and Elkins shot and killed him and left him down in the woods on the Boone side where he fell. Wm. Agra Cook, David Cooke and Green Sizemore who were bringing salt from the Kanawah Salt Works, met the men without Allen at the mouth of Short Creek in Boone Co.. When these men came to Clear Fork they were told that Allen, the prisoner, was with these men when they passed the home of Lewis Alda Cook. A search was made and the body found in the woods about 100 yards from Walnut Gap. William Stewart and David Cooke returned, brought the body to the Wyoming side and buried it nine days after he was shot.
