He was one of the guards that was escorting his wife Elizabeth's brother, John "Crap" Allen, to a Civil War POW camp when John was killed.[Joseph Allen Desc..FTW]

Ralph Laverty is said to have come from Ireland and first settled in Philidelphia. He removed to Augusta Co., now Bath Co., Virginia where he had surveyed a land grant of 224 acres, granted by King George II, on June 1, 1750. His property adjoined that of his brother-in-law, James Stuart who was granted 300 acres on Stuarts Creek, issued on the same day.
Ralph first married Elizabeth Stuart, a sister of James. From records, there were known children: William, Rebecca, and possibly a Steel Laverty. It is reported that William and Steel removed to Greenbrier Co. where Steel was killed by the Indians. There is no data to confirm the existence of this Steel.
Ralph Laverty married secondly Jane Hicklin, the widow of Robert Graham. Jane was a daughter of Thomas Hicklin Sr. To this union there were three daughters: Agnes, Sarah and Martha.
In his will dated February 17, 1790, Ralph Laverty of the Cowpasture, seems to have favored daughter Rebecca. The following four daughters were listed in his will on February 17, 1790 From records found, it appears that William and Rebecca Laverty were children of his first marriage.

3. Sarah Laverty who married James Clark, a son of John Clark and Elizabeth Lampkin.

In about the year 1800, Chaney, a slave of the widow Laverty, murdered her own two children by drowning.
The known children of Ralph Laverty and Elizabeth Stuart William Laverty settled at the mouth of Indian Creek which empties into the New River in Greenbrier Co., Virginia, in what is now Monroe Co., W.Virginia.. He married Nancy Jamison on June 9, 1792 in Greenbrier Co. Virginia. William Laverty died April 22, 1818. in Monroe Co., West Virginia We have a copy of his will.

Ralph Laverty, a son of William Laverty and Nancy Jamison, was born in about the year 1791 in Greenbrier Co., Virginia. Ralph married Sarah Farmbrough on March 17, 1818. Sarah was a daughter of James Frambrough. James left a will in which he named Sarah, Betsey, his brother William, and John Frambrough, a son of Sarah, and James Frambrough a son of Betsy. Nothing was mentioned of
a wife. His will was dated February 16, 1818 and attested by John Massey and Joshia Butcher
Ralph Lafferty and Drue Lafferty, a niece, came from Raleigh Co. and settled on Milam Fork in Wyoming Co.. Drue, a daughter of Elizabeth, had the following sons: (1) James Lafferty who died in 1926 and was buried at Glen Fork; (2) Goodall Lafferty is still an old citizen on Milam; (3) Floyd
Lafferty lived there for years. Ralph Lafferty is found listed In the 1830 Census of Logan Co..
In the 1850 Census records for Wyoming Co., in the State of Virginia, on July 28th of that year lists, Elizabeth Allen as head of household #25 at age 45. Children listed were:

Reney Allen, female age 23, was listed in this household including Drusilla Laverty age 25, and James A. Laverty age 2 and Elizabeth Laverty age 1.
John Allen Jr. as well as Ralph Laverty were not listed in this Census period. It was said that Ralph and John hid out in the mountains thinking the Census taker was a Tax assessor.

Elizabeth Lafferty, a daughter of William Laverty, and a sister of Ralph Laverty, married John Allen Jr. "Crap Allen" (when) and lived up on the M.P. McGraw place near the Clens Fork Gap in Wyoming Co..
