Todds of Georgia

    The Todds who settled in Georgia in colonial days appear to have come from 2 or 3 Pennsylvania families (Philadelphia and Chester Co) and a family from Bertie Co, NC.

    Liberty/McIntosh County: Mystery Family From Pennsylvania

    John Todd abt 1720 died 1758 came from Philadelphia to North Carolina and then by 1745 to Craven District of South Carolina, settling on the Wateree River and Dutchman Creek. In 1751, he sold his land and moved to the Newport District of Georgia (Liberty County), where he died in 1758 in McIntosh County. His will referred to lands in Virginia. This John may be some unknown branch of the Joseph Todd d 1699 Philadelphia family.

    Wilkes/Putnam/Jones County: Descendants of Joseph Todd d 1699 Philadelphia

    Four great-grandchildren of Joseph Todd d 1699 came to Georgia from North Carolina between 1779 and 1783. These were Caleb ca 1751 d. aft 1803, John 1752-1819, Mary 1762-1866, Aaron 1768 d. aft 1803, (and possibly other siblings). They were all children of Benjamin Todd 1725/28 d 1817/20. Benjamin came from Easton, Northampton Co, PA to Rowan Co, NC about 1772, and then migrated up to Madison Co, KY ca 1796 where he died in 1817/20.
    Caleb was in Wilkes Co, GA by 1786 and possibly is the Caleb on the land lottery of 1803;

    Mary had sons Reuben Todd born 1780 in GA and William ?Billy? Todd born 1781 in GA, who migrated to Rutherford Co, TN. Reuben lived to be over 100 years old. Mary moved to TN ca 1784, then back to Rowan Co NC in 1792 and perhaps back to GA;

    John moved to Putnam Co, GA by 1813 and to Jones Co by 1816 where he died in 1819.

    Aaron last was noted on the Georgia Land Lottery of 1803 in Wilkes County.
    John A. Todd b 1787 GA married in Warren Co, KY ca 1808, went to Missouri in the 1820-30s, and died in 1862 in Callaway Co, MO. This family is genetic match to Mary Todd Lincoln group and may be related to Mecklenburg Co NC family.
    The John Todd who was on Long Creek in Wilkes County ,Georgia by 1790 and died about 1803 may be part of this family also. However, family tradition says he was the son of James H.A.Todd who bought land in Long Creek in 1789.

His son Stephen was married in Warren Co, GA in 1798. By 1804, his son Robert was in Ohio and by 1806, his son Stephen was in Belmont Co., OH. William died in Belmont Co, OH around 1810. He is likely the son of John Todd who died in 1775 in Chester Co, PA.
