ID: I0305
Name: Brice Anderson (m:SStrange) EDMONDS
Sex: M
ALIA: /Anderson/
Name: Anderson EDMONDS
Birth: ABT 1838 in Jefferson, Tennessee. This is NOT the guy in Wilson Co, TN in 1850. Those are EDWARDS. See notes for 1862 bondsman, Brice A.
Death: in last seen in Jefferson around 1865. . . . .We can NOT prove he is the guy who shows up in Hamilton Co and marries Marg Shipley. Does anyone have documentation or his signature?
Note: Yes, I"m calling him Brice Anderson Edmonds (see documents below with the name changing). And I'm leaning toward his having left Jefferson, gone to Hamilton County and married Margaret Shipley BUT WITH A BIG DISCLAIMER THAT WE CAN'T PROVE IT. It's all circumstantial.
DOES ANYONE HAVE HIS SIGNATURE FROM HAMILTON COUNTY? I think I have a pretty close one from the guy in Jefferson County in Sept 1865.
In Jefferson he appears to be the "B. A. EDMONDS" in the 1861 tax rolls, the one who signed a petition for a road on Muddy Creek Hill in 1861, and the Brice A. bondsman in Jan 1862 for William Henry Strange and Edith Jane Edmonds, and affidavit for Ann Phillips' application for Jeremiah's Civil War service in 1865. All help appreciated on this!
He is NOT the Anderson EDWARDS (((NOTE EDWARDS))) in Wilson County in 1850.
I doubt he's the son of Brice Edmonds and Chilnessa Patterson. There's room in the 1840 census for him but where is he in 1850 age 12 when Brice's family is in Alabama -- and they ALREADY have a 12-year-old son. Probably not their son.
--OR-- he might be the son of John Edmonds and Phalby/Falby Ellison. That would make him the older brother of Jonathan Edmonds who married Laurinda Petty and John who I can't figure out yet. Why isn't he with Falby and her new husband, Christopher Carey) and the other two boys in the 1850 census? Possibly not their son.
--OR-- he might be the left-behind son of Shadrack Edmonds and Rachel Russell who were in Blount in 1850 and then moved to Missouri. They have a 15-year-old son named A.B. on the 1850 census with them. But he appears to be the A.B. Edmonds who died in the Confederate Army in Sept 1862. That man enlisted in Little Rock, ARK and lists birth place as Blount, Tennessee on his records. I can't find any other guy who matches yet. Possibly not their son.
--OR-- he might be the son of some mysterious Joseph Edmonds who married some Margaret Black in 1827 and is never seen again. Where is he on the 1850 census? Can't find Joseph & Margaret at ALL and certainly not with a kid.
--OR-- he might be the brother of Joel? But who are Joel's parents?
--OR-- he might be the son of the Mary or the Rachael who are listed as heads of households in the 1841 and 1842 Scholastic Population rolls in District 36 of Jefferson County.
--OR-- he might be the son of James Campbell Edmonds and MissX if he was married before he married Delila Hall. If we go by the 1870 census "Cam" was born around 1821. Since Brice is 22 in the 1860 census he could have been the son of a 17-year-old Cam. There isn't a Brice or anyone who fits around age 12 on the 1850 census either!
------------------------------ July 2011: Trip to Jefferson County Archives found multiple B.A., Brice, Brice A., and Anderson Edmonds references in Jefferson which we already suspected.
The first one is the one born around 1815 in TN who married Chilnessa Patterson and moved to Alabama.
Bondsmen with name of Edmonds finds one B.A. and three Brice A. Edmonds.
B.A. was bondsman for James Marion Aley and Susannah C. Millkin 22Dec1846.
Brice A. was bondsman for Alexander Patterson and Matilda Keeney 29Dec1835.
Brice A. was bondsman for Charles Patterson and Eliza Jane Moore 19Jan1843.
And then THAT Brice Anderson (#1) Edmonds moved to Alabama and is there in the 1850 census!
THEN---------1862: There is a Brice A. Edmonds who served as bondsman in Jefferson in 1862 for William Henry Strange's marriage to Eda Jane Edmonds (Jan 9, 1862) Eli Rainwater, JP.

1861: Free White Males, January 1, 1861 Dist. 11 1964 Joel Edmonds Dist. 3 504 B. A. Edmons ---- Is this Anderson? Is this the same Brice who married Margaret Shipley in Hamilton County? Are they same person which means the guy in Jefferson didn't die. Or is the Brice in Hamilton a whole new person?? NO PROOF. 1861: Jefferson County Court records show a 9 OCT 1861 petition to the County Court (document scanned as cou1861-0009-001.jpg) from residents of the Muddy Creek area requesting a new road. B. A. EDMONDS is one of the signers.
1861: There is a Brice A. Edmonds on a list [in file cou1861-0222-002.jpg at Jefferson Archives] of men to own a "Riffle, Shot Gun, Pouch". Out of the 34 men only three own a "riffle"-- two of them have a pouch. Brice doesn't own a gun.
1862: There is a Brice A. Edmonds who served as bondsman in Jefferson in 1862 for William Henry Strange's marriage to Eda Jane Edmonds (Jan 9, 1862) Eli Rainwater, JP.
You can't make me believe that the Brice A. Edmonds who had moved to Alabama came back to petition for a road, get on a gun list and be a bondsman.
1865: There is a B. A. Edmonds who signed affidavit in support of Anna EDMONDS Phillips receiving widow's pension for her husband Jeremiah Phillips. See them in this file. Sept 4, 1865 he signed his name. The signature is different but enough alike after 4 years and on a squished list with neighbors names that I think it's the same hand.
Did Brice Anderson Edmonds die before 1870 census --OR-- did he leave Jefferson, go missing on the 1870 and show up in Hamilton County married to Margaret Shipley in the 1880 census?
1870: Jefferson, Tennessee Sarah Edwards 29 (there is no place to list marital status on this census) James Edwards 12 Leana Edwards 10 (yes, it's an "L". I really tried to make it an "S" but just couldn't. Can you? If so, it helps solve a mystery) Brice Edwards 7 (named for ____________________ ?) his dad???? Marton Edwards 6 (Maston) NEXT DOOR ON ONE SIDE are Inman Striplin & Martha J. Griffin and on the other side Sarah's parents, then Wm then James 86 NC and Sarah 90 VA 1880: Jefferson, Tennessee Sarah E. Edmons 39 now listed as widow James E. Edmons 21 Phena S. Edmons 20 (yes, it's a "P". Go back a page and look at Pleasant, Patrick and Pinkney. She's still in the house in 1881 so she's not the one who married James Marion Fain. She appears to be the "Sena S Edmonds" who married George W. Burchfiel in 1881? Brice R. Edmons 18 William M. Edmons 16 Sarah C. Edmons 9 <1871> (who is her father if Anderson died prior to Jun 1, 1869 as someone said?)
In the June 1880 census the Edmonds family is one family away from the Ellis family. Sarah C "Dona" Edmonds, 9, and Inman Striplin Ellils, 6, grew up as neighbors. 2-year age difference in their only census in 1900 before she died.
Sarah C. Edmonds (who died before the 1910 census) is daughter of Anderson and was born around 1871 per the 1800 census. She is listed as Dona in the 1900 marriage to Inman Striplin Ellis where they are living next door to Wm Maston Edmonds, her brother. Sarah C. D. didn't marry George Washington Burchfiel--she would have been 10 years old. We believe it was her older sister whose name kept changing-- C.S., Leana, Phena.
Jane D.V.'s "Aunt Leona in Sevier" said that Geo. Washington Burchfiel's wife's real first name was Sarah Lucenia Edmonds, but since there were so many cousins named Sarah that she went by Senia. Says she's buried in the Fox cemetery but her gravestone is sunken and the numbers are illegible.
