    CHARLOTTE, N.C. ­ Mrs. Emma Grace "Penny" Rodger, 76, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Lakeview Living Center in Pineville, N.C.

    Born in Newport News, Penny spent the last five years in Daytona Beach, Fla., living with three close friends, Ruth, Margaret and Laura. In December 1998 she relocated to Charlotte to spend more time with her daughter and grandchildren.

    During her life she was employed by the Shipyard, Bendix/Allied Signal, and last worked for the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe as the Gift Shop manager.

    Mrs. Rodger is survived by her two children, Vernon B. Iams of Newport News, and Mary Lou Mercer and her husband, David, of Charlotte; two stepchildren, Larry Rodger of Newport News and Linda Schavnis of Exton, Pa.; two brothers, Willard Owens, and his wife, Betty, of Newport News, and Marvin Owens and his wife, Barbara, of Virginia Beach; and seven grandchildren.

    The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at the funeral home chapel by the Rev. Taylor Jefferson. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
