He was transferred to County K., 17th Maine and later to the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. They lived at several places in Turner between 1865 - 1874 Originally he received eight dollars a month, the next year it was raised to twenty-five dollars. For a time around 1874 his pension was cut to fifteen dollars a month, but he was able to get it increased to twenty-four dollars around 1876. Pension was increased to thirty-one dollars a month around 1880 and raised to fifty dollars around 1885. Around 1889 it was reduced to thirty dollars a month. They lived at several places in Phillips. Samuel was still living there when he wrote "A Soldier's Story." He survived 34 years with a bullet lodged in his right lung from a Civil War injury and wrote "A Soldier's Story" in 1899 detailing his experiences. He attended the 1902 Wing Reunion at Sandwich. Samuel, along with his brother Silas and his sister Nancy, organized and started the Wing Reunions of Phillips, Maine in 1892.
