Suzanne: According to the information I have Alice Cathrine Holtzclaw was the wife of Henry Hitt b 1719 in VA d 1780-1789 in SC. Henry and Alice were parents of Peter b 1763 d 1836 in SC. I have an abstract of the will of this Peter Hitt which shows children by 1st wife (unknown) were Elizabeth, William, James, Nancy, John, Henry, Robert, Susannah, and Thomas. His will states that in 1832 the children by his first wife had already received their inheritance and his then existing estate would go to his third wife and her children. I found where Peter transferred property to daughter Susannah and son John but no record of similar gifts to the other children by his first wife. I had hoped that such information might prove that my James was the son of this Peter, but no such luck. Actually Peter was married three times,1st wife unknown, then Jane Stanfield (no Children),and third Mary UKN who was the mother of Joseph, Elisha, and Jane. The source of much of the information I have on Peter is "Peter Lebeus Hitt, Ancestors and Decendents in America. 1714-1982" by Maurice D Hitt Family records show that my James Hitt was born in 1784 and probably died between 1844 and 1850. The last record I have of James is when he and his family were given letters of dismissal from Peters Creek Baptist church in 1844. He does not appear in the 1850 census of Cherokee Co Ga with the rest of the family. Still searching Sam Sam and Sarah Rogers" ________________________________________________________________ Page 16

I have had the good fortune to find at the genealogical library in Houston abstracts of the deeds in the first 41 books of deed records for Edgefield Co., South Carolina (1786--about 1824). There are numerous references to Hitts, in particular to Peter Hitt. I believe that this Peter Hitt is a son of Henry. He first purchased land in Edgefield Co. in 1790 on Westcote's Creek. Westcoat's Creek (spelled in a variety of ways in the deed records) is a short creek that flows directly into the Savannah River. Benningfield's Creek is close to Westcoat's Creek and is another short creek that flows directly into the Savannah River. These 2 creeks are between the Savannah River and Stephen's Creek, which flows parallel to the Savannah River for a significant distance and then turns south and flows into the Savannah River. Westcoat's Creek and Benningfield's Creek are now in McCormick Co., South Carolina (created in 1916), but in the 19th century were in the far western corner of Edgefield County. I will include the references that I found in the deed records to Peter Hitt. I also found references to John Hitt, Martin Hitt, Sarah Hitt, William Hitt, Tilman Hitt, Susanna Hitt (daughter of Peter), Henry Hitt (witness in 1818), Robert Hitt, and Thomas Hitt. I don't know who all of these people are. The 1790 census indicates that there were 2 John Hitts in Edgefield District. One of them is said to be the eldest son of Harman Hitt, although I am not aware of any evidence that shows that Harman's son John went to South Carolina. The other John Hitt is probably a brother of Peter Hitt and thus another son of old Henry Hitt. Earl J. Hitt (database 'hitthaynie' in WorldConnect) says that Henry's son John left Edgefield Co. and went to Washington Co., Georgia whence after a few years he moved westward to Missouri. I am not aware of any evidence that shows that Henry's son John, rather than Harman's son John, is the John Hitt that went to Georgia and thence onward to Missouri.
On August 19, 1773 Marmaduke Stanfield of Halifax Co., Virginia sold to Peter Hitt of Halifax Co. for 42 a tract of about 140 acres in Halifax Co. on the branches of Evans Creek. It is described by metes and bounds. (Halifax Co. Deed Records 9/115) On June 15, 1785 Peter Hitt of Halifax Co. sold to George Wiley for 160, current money of Virginia, a tract in Halifax Co. on the branches of Evenses Creek containing by estimation 140 acres. It is described by metes and bounds and is the same tract that Peter Hitt bought in 1773. (13/207) On April 26, 1790 Jesse Copeland of Edgefield District, South Carolina sold to Peter Hitt of the same place for 15 a tract of about 102 acres on Wescotes Creek of Savannah River adjacent to Celey Williams, Maj. Tutt, John McCoy, Thomas Buckham. (Edgefield Co. Deed Records 1/259) On October 20, 1804 Peter Hitt of Edgefield District sold to John Fargerson of the same place for $50 a tract of 102 acres of Waistcoat Cr. of Savannah River bounded on NW by land of Celey Williams and Benjamin Tutt, on NE by John McCoy, on SE by land surveyed for Thomas Beckham and on SW by vacant land. Witnesses: Jesse Copeland, John (X) Taylor. Signed Peter Hitt. (26/25) On January 29, 1814 Benjamin Hagood of Pendleton District sold to Peter Hitt of Edgefield District for valuable consideration a tract of 433 acres on B-field [sic] Creek granted to James Haygood and bounded at time of grant by Reuben Monday and vacant land. Witnesses: Jeremiah Brown, William McKinney. (32/102) On November 4, 1815 Peter Hitt of Edgefield sold to Edward Collier, planter, of Abbeville a tract of 7.8 acres near Benefields Creek of Savannah River adjancent to lands of Peter Hitt, Trapier, Holt, Copland and land sold by John Boyd. Witnesses: John Hill, Jane (O) Hitt. Signed Peter Hitt. (33/43) On August 24, 1816 Peter Hitt of Edgefield sold to William Price of the same place for $200 a tract of 106 acres being part of land originally granted to James Hogwood on Benefields and Westcoats Creeks adjacent to lands of Robert White, McKinney, McCoy. Witnesses: John Lyon, Elizabeth (X) Lyon. Signed Peter Hitt. On June 9, 1818 Peter Hitt of Edgefield conveyed by deed of gift to his daughter Susanna Hitt of Edgefield a tract of 126 acres on Beddingfields Creek of Savannah River being part of a grant to James Hammond and conveyed by him to Peter Hitt. The tract is adjacent to Peter Hitt and McCoy's Road. Witnesses: Wm. Price, Henry Hitt. A plat of February 2, 1815 by Edward Collier, DS shows adjacent lands of Peter Hitt, Munday, Wm. McKinney, Wm. Price, Robert White and road to McCoy's ferry. (35/153) On June 9, 1818 Peter Hitt of Edgefield sold to John Hitt of the same place for valuable consideration a tract of 105 acres on Beddingfield's Creek of Savannah River. Witnesses: Wm. Price, Henry Hitt. A plat surveyed March 23, 1818 by James Thomkins, DS shows 105 acres adjacent to lands of Peter HItt, Breazeal, Wm. Price. (35/152) On July 23, 1822 Peter Hitt of Edgefield sold to John Hitt of the same place for $1200 a tract of 230 acres on both sides of Beddingfield Creek of Savannah River adjacent to lands of Stephen Tomkins, Jas. Hagwood, Landon Tucker, Sam'l Tomkins, Edward Collins. Witnesses: Thos. Hitt, Robert Hitt. Signed Peter Hitt. On June 2, 1823 Polly Hitt relinquished her dower rights. Signed Polly (X) Hitt. (40/79) One year later John Hitt sold this tract.

An abstract of Peter Hitt's will is on page 139 of COLLECTION OF UPPER SOUTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL AND FAMILY RECORDS, vol 2 (James E. Wooley, 1981): Peter Hitt Apt. 4 File 223; Greenville, S.C. "I, Peter Hitt of Greenville Dist. do make this my last will and testament . . ." The children of his first wife, namely, Elizabeth, William, James, Nancy, John, Henry, Robert, Susannah and Thomas have already received their portion of his estate and get no more. "I give to my beloved wife Mary Hitt my plantation with all appurtainances. My Negro man Daniel, all stock, household and kitchen furniture during her natural life and at her death to be equally divided between my 3 youngest children, Joseph, Elisha P. and Jane Hitt." Executrix: Mary Hitt. Witnesses: R. S. C. Foster, Phebe (X) Young, Richard Young. Dated February 29, 1832, probated April 25, 1836. TWO PETER HITTS: Each of the 5 sons of the immigrant Peter Hitt named one of his sons Peter. Thus there are an abundance of Peter Hitts and two of them have a connection with South Carolina. In 1790 Peter Hitt and Lazarus Hitt are in Laurens Co., South Carolina with Joseph Hitt. In 1800 Peter and Lazarus are next to each other and Joseph is not present. The immigrant Peter had a son named Joseph; presumably he died before 1800 and Peter and Lazarus are his sons. In 1790 Peter Hitt and William Stanfield are in Edgefield, South Carolina. William died in 1805; Peter Hitt is an executor of his estate and Jane Hitt is one of the legatees. There are several Stanfields in the 1787 tax list for Halifax Co., Virginia including William and Marmaduke. In 1773 a Peter Hitt in Halifax Co. bought 140 acres from Marmaduke Stanfield. We can assume that this Peter Hitt is the one who married Jane Stanfield. The immigrant Peter had a son named Henry; Henry Hitt bought 202 acres in Halifax Co. in 1764 and sold it in 1779. Marmaduke Stanfield witnessed the latter transaction. It seems likely that Henry is Peter's father. From 1782 to 1784 Peter Hitt is in the Halifax Co. personal property tax list. He has no slaves, 3 or 4 horses and a few (6, 10) cattle. In the same period there are several other Hitts in the tax list (Isaac, John, James, Stanley). There are 2 Josephs in the 1782 list. It is not clear who they are.
