  • ID: I0922
  • Name: Bartlett Edmunds
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: Bartlett /EDMONDS/
  • Birth: in prob Lunenberg, VA
  • Note:
    NOTES:
((1)) This Bartlett Edmunds is almost certainly the same person as the Bartlett Edmonds seen living in Rutherford Co., TN, at the time of the 1830 Census and in Marshall Co., TN, at the time of the 1840 Census. The equation of these two names is based on (a) the same uncommon first name of Bartlett and (b) the closeness in the spelling of the two last names (Edmunds and Edmonds) both of which can be placed in Rutherford Co., TN, in the 1823 to 1830 timeframe. It is considered highly unlikely that two different persons with such similar names would be present in this sparsely populated county during this period.

((2)) Only one name resembling Bartlett Edmunds/Edmonds can be found anywhere in TN in either the 1830 or 1840 Census Reports. Bartlett Edmonds is found in the 1830 Census in Rutherfor d Co. and in adjoining Marshall Co. in the 1840 Census. No names resembling Bartlett Edmonds /Edmunds can be found anywhere in the 1850 Census for TN. Moreover, there are no Edmunds/Edmonds names listed in the 1850 Census for Marshall Co., TN.

((3)) Although the names of his children are unknown there was a Mary Jane Edmunds who married a Jeremiah Bennett in Marshall Co., TN, on 31 Jul 1841, who was very likely Bartlett's daughter. This family is found in the 1850 Census living in Calloway Co., KY, with three Edmonds children, James, Nancy and John. These children were probably three of Mary's minor and orphaned siblings (see more under Jeremiah Bennett in this database). Another of Bartlett's daughters may have been Emily Edmunds who married Gordon Devoar/Devore in Marshall Co., TN, on 1 Nov 1840 (not 31 Oct, not 1 Dec--you have to actually read the image, not rely on the transcribed index). See more under the name Gordon Devore in this database and another file on WorldConnect. And yet another of Bartlett 's children, may have been Calvin C. Edmonds, see more under his name.

((4)) In the same county where Bartlett Edmunds was married to .... Steagall (Lunenburg Co. , VA), two other Edmunds men, Cain and Wilkins, and an Edmunds woman, Elizabeth, were married between the years 1807 and 1819 by the same Methodist Minister, Thomas Adams, who married Bartlett. (Thomas Adams' occupation is found in the 1850 Census.) These commonalities suggest these three Edmunds persons along with Bartlett may have all lived in the same vicinity of Lunenburg County, may have attended the same church and may even have been related as siblings and/or at least cousins.

((5)) Other databases posted at RootsWeb.com, World Connect, show a Bartlett Edmunds married to a Lizzie Steagall, daughter of Randolph and Susanna (Lafoon/Laffoon) Steagall. A Randolph Steagall (born about 1767 in VA) is found living with a probable son in Marshall Co., TN , in the census for 1850. See more under his name in this database.
