Alyce Dorothy Argel was born August 22, 1918 in Metlakatla, Alaska andlived 82 years in the Pierce County area. Her mother was Martha Aurioland her father was George Landro.
Alyce married Julian S. Argel, who passed in 1961.
She as a member of the Gitwilgiots clan of Tsimpsheans,and Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska.
Her family moved to the area in the 1920s and rented farm property on the Puyallup Indian Reservation. She attended St. George's Indian School, Fife Public Schools andKnapp#s Business College. Alyce worked for 30 years for the WashingtonState Department of Social & Health Services, the Washington NationalGuard, the Governor's Office of Indian Affairs, and directed the PuyallupTribe#s Youth Group Home before retiring. She volunteered work with theTacoma Youth Mission, was a member of the Pierce County DemocraticCommittee, Ombudsman for the State Commission on Aging, and sherepresented her union, the AFMSCE, in hearings in Washington, D.C. Diagnosed with ALS while she lived in retirement in Graham, she passed away at the Franciscan Health Care Center in Tacoma on January 11, 2003.
Alyce is survived by her 5 children, Eugene Argel, Julia Ball, Gregory Argel, Martha Laronal, Julian O. Argel; 12 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and by her sister, Laura Zantua.
The Rosary will be on Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m., and Funeral service onWednesday, January 15th at 11:00 a.m., at Gaffney#s Funeral Home, 1002South Yakima, Tacoma, Washington.
