In 1852 he made the overland trek to California for the gold rush. He returned to Lewis County, Missouri, in 1855, the year his mother, Ketturah Stamps Ewalt Bailey, died from injuries from a fall off a horse. Samuel married Martha Jane Wilson on February 3, 1859. They had eight children born between 1860 and 1882. In the War Between the States, Samuel and five of his brothers fought for the Confederacy. Samuel was a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain Joshua Hobbs's Company, 2nd Northeast Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A., and participated in the raid on Canton, Missouri, and the Battle of Kirksville.
