_______ from posting by Tom Poole on RootsWeb in Nov 2012 (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=generalpoole&id=I635) The John OLIVER Family 1784-1965: John OLIVER migrated to Robeson County, North Carolina in 1805 and settled in the southeastern part of the state, four miles from the South Carolina line. He bought farm lands along the Fair Bluff, NC - Lake View, SC highway. But then it was the Fair Bluff and Pages Mills Highway - midway between the two little towns, five miles from each. In 1806 John OLIVER married Ann GRANTHAM whose father had extensive land holdings in the same area. Ann GRANTHAM's mother had been kidnapped by Indians when she was a small girl. [The original account does not make clear who was the small girl - Ann or her mother; also, whether or not she was returned to her family.] She [presumably Ann] had a younger sister named Esther who never married and who always made her home with the John OLIVER family. Considering Ann was destined to bear and raise 11 children (only one died in infancy) this was probably fortunate. John OLIVER was a leading factor in the religious and moral life of the community. He was a member of Olivet Methodist Church for over 75 years and a local preacher for over 67 years. (This inscription is on his memorial window in Olivet Church.) The influence of the John OLIVER family on the history of this church is attested to by the fact that six of the eight memorial windows in the church are dedicated to the memory of members of the immediate family of John Oliver. John and Ann are buried in Olivet Methodist Church Cemetery, Marietta, NC along with many members of their family. Marietta, NC is about two miles from the South Carolina boundary line between Lake View and Fair Bluff. _________
