  • Note: II) William Stephen, son of William Backus, was born in 1660. He received in course of time the title of lieutenant and was one of the six Norwich legatees of Joshua Arma, one of the original proprietors of Norwich, Connecticut. In 1693 Lieutenant Backus settled in Windham, Connecticut, being one of the first twenty-two inhabitants of that town. The present Windham Green was part of the home lot of William Stephen Backus. He married Elizabeth, daughter of William Pratt, of Saybrook, Connecticut. Children: William, Samuel, born 1693; John, Joseph, mentioned below; Nathaniel, married Elizabeth, daughter of T. Tracy.
