  • ID: I0603
  • Name: GEORGE ADAM RAUSER , REISER, RIESER, RASOR, Sr. 1 2
  • Sex: M
  • Name: George Adam Rauser , Razor 3 4
  • Birth: in Germany 2 5
  • Death: ABT 1798 in En route to South Carolina from Virginia 6 7 8 9
  • Reference Number: 603
  • Note:
George Adam Rauser is alleged to be the original Racer ancestor according to an article published in "Beyond Germana", Vol. 3, No. 4 by Gene Dear. The article states that George "came to America from Germany on the ship Mary and Sarah, Capt. Thomas Brodrich, from Amsterdam via Portsmouth, England, arriving in Philadelphia on 26 October 1754." Later research indicates that the Brigantine Mary and Sarah carried 90 persons from "Franconia, Wirtenberg and the Palatinate". George initially settled in Newton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.

According to the article, on February 14, 1774, George bought 100 acres in the Robinson River area of Culpeper County, Virginia (now Madison County) from Frederick and Sarah Baumgardner. (I found the deed for this sale in Culpeper County, Virginia courthouse: Deed Book "G" - pg. 204.) My notes state that "George Razor bought 100 acres in Little Fork from Frederick Baungarner and Sarah, his wife for 85 Pounds "current money of Virginia". Located on Robinson River. (Name also shown in deed as "Reazor.) The Razor / Raser family is found in the Hebron Lutheran Church Register from 1776 to 1798. About 1794, George Razor, Sr., his sons Peter and Christian, son-in-law George Swindle, several members of the Swindle family and, possibly at the same time, Arron Clore moved to the Abbeville District of South Carolina. Legend has it that George Sr. died during the move and was buried along the way. In South Carolina, the family became known consistently as "Rasor", whereas the family name in Virginia became "Racer".

Recent research, however, indicates that "Georg Reser & wife Margret" communed at Hebron Church on 2 October 1796 (1st Sunday in October). "Georg Reser" is shown as communing alone twice more; at Christmas, 1797 and at Easter 1798. It is presumed that Margret (Margaretha) died between 2 October 1796 and Christmas 1797.

The likelihood that George Adam was still alive in 1798 is reinforced by a sale of property - "101 acres on Robinson River" - to his eldest son, Jacob, on 27 Sept. 1798. This land is probably the 101 acre "Robinson River Tract" acquired by George in 1789 from George Swindel and Frederick Bumgarner for "50 pounds current money of Virginia".

The Germanna Record - Vol. #6 - pg. 89 - under "Late comers to the Hebron Church community" states that "George Racer (Razor, Rieser, etc.)" signed the Hebron Church covenant fairly early after it started in 1776. Presumably, the Covenant referred to is the "Culpeper County Petition" of 22 October 1776 signed by "Georg Rieser".

"George Razor" was appointed co-executor of the will of Peter Gass/Coss proven in Sussex County, New Jersey on 2 March 1769. The account was provided, again with George Razor as co-executor, on 25 May 1771. Source: New Jersey Archives, Series I, Vol. 33, P.158.

"George Razer (Goerge Razer)" is listed in the August 1774 Tax List for Newton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. Source: NJ Tax Lists Index 1772-1822, pg. 137.

"George Rasor, Senior" is listed on 22 April as having "two horses" in the 1791 Culpeper Co., Virginia Tax Rolls.

The records indicate that he had the following children:

    1. Jacob Razor, a member of the Culpeper Militia in 1781, one of three tithables in the family of George Racer in 1781, m. Susannah Snyder Feb. 6, 1786 and was given 112 acres by his father, George Rasor, in 1789; he and his wife Susannah had a daughter Margaret , b. May 30, 1788.
    2. Peter Rasor.
    3. Christopher Rasor (called Christian in the Church records).

    6. George Rasor.
