  • Note: Emery Cushing (1796 - 1837) was proprietor of the Ottawa Hotel, Montreal, situated on the Corner of St. Maurice and McGill Streets. It was then one of the first hotels in the city and was renowned as the rendez-vous of merchants and traders from all parts of Canada and the United States. He ran a famous line of stages between Montreal and Lachine, importing about the year 1832, from England, for this purpose, at a cost of $2000, an immense four wheeled stage coach called "The Swallow" (L'Hirondelle). He was the first forwarder on the Ottawa River, using in the first instance large bateaux and subsequently becoming conjointly with the Hon. P. McGill owner of the pioneer Steamer "St. Andrews".
