    MILTON: George C. Cushing, 82, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Berlin N.H., on Sept. 27, 1920, the son of William and Lillian (Phillips) Cushing. The Cushing family moved to Vermont and farmed along the Connecticut River in the town of Waterford. George entered the U.S. Army during World War II and was medically discharged in March 1943. March 1, 1946, he married Marion E. Aldrich in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Littleton, N.H. When he left the farm, he was employed as a DHIA herd tester. He was later employed by the state of Vermont as a State Police dispatcher in St. Johnsbury and then at Redstone in Montpelier. He later worked as a state social worker in the St. Albans area until he became permanently disabled. There were three things that George enjoyed in life: first was his large family, which included his loving wife, his brothers and sisters, his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. He loved to garden, raising and canning much of the food that the family ate. He enjoyed the woods and loved to hunt and fish. George is survived by his loving wife of more than 56 years, Marion; 10 children, John and his wife Linda of Milton, Linda and her husband Bruce Barrows of Georgia, Paula and her husband Charles Racine of Cambridge, Allen and his wife Carol of Milton, Sandra and her husband Frank Read of Georgia, Carl and his wife Karen of Milton, Richard and his wife Nancy of Essex, Stephen and his wife Michelle of Colchester, Terrance and his wife Tan-ya of Milton, and Theresa and her husband, Craig Savoy, of Milton. He is also survived by 50 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; his brother, James W. and his wife, Dot, of Bangor, Maine; and his sister-inlaw, Nina Cushing, wife of Allen; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Ingraham and Mary Delaney, and brothers Charles and Allen, all of New Hampshire. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery in Milton. Me-morial contributions may be made to the VNA, Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Suite 1, Colchester, Vt. 05446. Visiting hours will be held Monday Sept. 15, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with prayers at 6 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Milton.

    MILTON ?? CUSHING, George C. ?? A largely attended funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Catholic Church with Father John G. Feltz celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Assisting was Deacon Stephen Ratte. The pall was placed on Mr. Cushing's casket at the entrance of the church by his daughters, Linda Barrows, Paula Racine, Sandra Reed and Theresa Savoy. His wife, Marion, placed the crucifix upon the casket. Vocalist was daughter Paula Racine accompanied by Ed DeVarney. Altar servers were grandsons A.J. and Beau Cushing. The readings were proclaimed by grandson Matt Cushing. Deacon of the Gospel was Stephen Ratte. Ministers of the Eucharist were Jeanette Adams, Angela Barsalow, Wayne Lafayette, Shirley Parrott, Denise Phoenix and Jocelyne Wesson. The offertory gifts were presented by daughters Linda, Sandra and Theresa. A personal and moving tribute to his dad and family was shared with those present by son John Cushing. Delegations present were from the town of Milton, town offices, schools, police, Fire and Rescue; the state of Vermont House of Representatives, Vermont State Police, area game wardens as well as Department of Fish and Wildlife representatives; the Vermont Department of Agriculture, Swanton Packing, Poulin Grain, St. Michael's College, New England Air and Plastic Monofil Co. as well as a wealth of neighbors and friends. An honor guard was present at the wake and during the Mass, comprising of members from the Knights of Columbus, Father Dan Roberts Council 10417 as well as Fourth Degree members of the Bishop Joyce Assembly, Milton. A police escort was provided en route by members of the Milton Police Department to St. Ann's Cemetery, where burial followed with Father Feltz and Deacon Ratte offering the committal prayers. Full military honors were accorded the deceased, and the American flag draping Mr. Cushing's casket was folded by members of the Army National Guard and presented to Mrs. Cushing by Major Thomas Brown. Final Taps was played by grandson Daniel Barrows. Bearers were sons John, Allen, Carl, Stephen, Richard and Terry Cushing. Monday evening's vigil prayers were offered by Father Feltz and Deacon Ratte in the Minor Funeral Home.
