    Groton, VT ? Ruth Evelyn Fifield, 85, died on Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. She was born in Wells River, VT, on June 18, 1928, the daughter of Harry Joseph and Doris Evelyn (Meader) Cushing. On June 7, 1958, she married Dale A. Fifield.

    Ruth was the cook and baker at the former Redburn's Diner in Woodsville. Over the years, she also worked at the Happy Hour Restaurant and the P& H Truck Stop in Wells River. For a brief time she was the cook in the cafeteria for the Blue Mountain Union School. Ruth attended the Groton United Methodist Church and worked on the Groton chicken pie suppers. She started and volunteered for the clothing exchange in Ryegate and Groton and was honored by Modern Woodmen of America for her community service. She belonged to the Red Hat Society. Ruth won the WYKR "Bird and Bloom" questions multiple times. She also enjoyed fly fishing.

    Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Dale Fifield on October 14, 1993; a son, Joseph Carroll Cushing; two brothers, Harold Cushing Murdock and Donald Cushing Murdock; and a sister, Priscilla Cushing. She is survived by three daughters, Karen L. Proulx and husband Kurt of Vergennes, VT, Donna M. Davis and husband Kurt, and Jennifer L. Martel and husband Joseph, both of North Haverhill, NH; three sons, Edwin B. Fifield and wife Joyce of Newbury, VT, Alan Fifield and wife Rose of Wells River, and Gary E. Fifield and wife Carrie of Landaff, NH; fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren; siblings, Katherine Cushing of Newbury, VT, Mary Coutermarsh of Concord, NH, James Cushing and wife Rebecca of Lisbon, NH, George Cushing and wife Linda of Waterford, VT, Elizabeth Cushing of Lisbon, NH, Harry Cushing and wife Sandra of Ryegate, VT, Doreen Delano of Newbury, VT, Linda Whitehill and husband Bud of Groton, VT, Patricia Carle of Prescott, AZ; sister in law, Ruth Sargeant Fifield of Wilder, VT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Calling hours will be on Thursday, November 7th from 6-8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A memorial service will be on Friday, November 8th at 1 PM at the Groton United Methodist Church, Scott Highway, Groton, VT with Pastor Candace Ricker, officiating. Burial will follow in the Groton Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Groton Food Shelf, 1476 Scott Highway, Groton, VT 05046.
