    "The family of Gifford is of high authority. They were seated at Honfleur, in Normandy, in the eigth century, -- three centuries before the conquest of England by Duke William. At the battle of Hastings (1066) "Sire Rundolph de Gifford" was one of the Conqueror's standard-bearers. Walther Fifford, Earl of Buckingham, was a cousin of the Conqueror....

    The line of decent from John Gifford to Margaret, who married Hugh Sargent, appears in the "Heralds' Visatation of Northamptonshire" in 1618-19. In the "Visatation" of 1681-82 the family is stated to be lineally descended from the ancient family of the name; and the same arms are given as being the arms of Francis Gifford, son of Roger, who was brother of Margaret."
