A graduate of Texas-Christian University, Velma Lena Armstrong was the

eighth and youngest child of William Louis Armstrong and Mary Frances
Osborn (1858-1900). Born in Bellefonte, a town that no longer exists,
in Jackson County, Alabama on 28 September 1845, her father William L.
Armstrong was the fifth child and only son of William C. Armstrong
(1802-1864) and Hannah Denton Lucas (1802-1862). Much of his life
has been profiled in the 1969 book Armstrongs of the Catawba, by Norma
Todd Cansler. In an 1866 letter to his cousin Mattie, W.L. Armstrong
described his Confederate service, "I went to Mississippi, there I
joined the 55th Regiment Ala Inft., Lorings Division, Polk's Corp,
Army of Mississippi and was with it from Nov. 10th 1863 till Dec. 16th
1864. At that time I was captured at Nashville, Tenn. I was taken to
prison, Camp Chase, Ohio, remained there till June 12th 1865. I
arrived home on the 18th June '65 and learned the sad news of Father's
death." W.L. moved to Bastrop County, Texas in 1870, and married Mary
Frances Osborn there on 13 January 1876. W.L. would be elected
Commander of the R. E. Lee Camp of United Confederate Veterans on
three occasions. He was also a Mason , a member of the Eastern Star,
and, for a time, a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Mr. Armstrong died in
Fort Worth, Texas on 9 February 1924.
