Name: Elizabeth BLOUNT
Birth: 1502 in Kinlet, Shropshire
Death: 1540 in Whiston, Northamptonshire
I have seen Elizabeth Blount described as 'a lady of singular beauty, a maid of honour to Catherine of Aragon, in singing, dancing and in all pastimes, she exceeded everyone, and this was what won the King's heart'. Indeed her musical skills, physical charms and
captivating personality made an indelible impression on the young King whose own passion for music is well known. In his youth he had been taught to play the organ, lute and harpsichord and he even composed the words to several song lyrics.
The King's interest in Mistress Blount occurred as his belief in Queen Catherine's ability to produce a living son waned. Her last child, a daughter, was born in November 1518, only to die within a few hours. That he should look for a distraction, might be understandable. However, neither Mistress Blount nor her family seemed to benefit from the association and it may be that they disapproved.
Elizabeth was to give birth to the King's illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy (named by the King) in 1519 and three to four months after the baby's birth she conceived again, the next child being called Elizabeth, and born in 1520. It is said that in the months following the birth of Henry, Elizabeth Blount had married Gilbert Talbois, although there has never been a record of a marriage found. What was the haste? Had the King taken another mistress?
