David Madison Coonc had a brother, Clark Coonc. At this writing (September 1994) little is known about Clark, however a great deal has been learned about descendents.
The census of 1880 of Waitsburgh, Washington (Walla Walla County) taken 8 June, 1880 shows the David Coonc Family as follows:
    David Coonc...Stockman (?) ...age 48
    Lizzie....... keeping house...age 40 (wife)

    Estella...... ...age 13 (daughter)
    Lula........ ...age 10 (daughter)
    Ella ...... ...age 8 (daughter)
    Hattie.... ...age 6 (daughter)

Using the LDS Family History Center I believe I have a lead on my David Madison Coonc's brother. I know this branch of the family ended up in Canada in the mid 1800's. Descendents are still living in and around Seattle, Tacoma and South King County. I think some of this branch may have come down into Eastern Washington around 1880 when our David Madison Coonc was big in the horse business. The main descendents of this branch is located around Czar, Alberta--some 200 miles east and south of Edmondton in wheat country. A main descendent now is the Brown name. A female descendent lives in Ocean Shores, WA. I have correspondence with "Paulene ______(?)" at Ocean Shores giving more details.
Stella Coonc wrote a fictionalized (?) story about the life of her grand- mother and grandfather (Elizabeth Jory Coonc and David Madison Coonc) that has been handed down to her sister Flossie and on to her son, Ralph Reid and now in the hands of Ralph's widow, Martha who lives in Spokane. Martha apparently is holding it for her grandson who some day may publish it. According to this "Stella manuscript" Stella's father, David Madison Coonc, had the following siblings: Clark, Millie, Bill and Matilda. In Grandma Coonc's writing we believe David Madison was born in Keokuk, Iowa, 1832. Other evidence indicates that younger brother Clark was born about 1842. It is believed David left home when he was 17 in 1849.

The Spokane, WA SPOKESMAN-REVIEW dated June 22, 1900 reports as follows:
Fatal accident to D.M. Coonce (sp), a Rosalia Pioneer "ROSALIA, Wash., June 21 - D.M Coonce (sp), a well known pioneer, met with an accident today that cost him his life. He had just returned from Bossburg and was trying to ride his horse into the livery stable when the animal became frightened and reared over backward, falling on its rider, the pommel of the saddle crushing Mr. Coonce's breast. He lived but a short time, retaining consciousness long enough to express a desire to see his wife and children before he died. He lived six miles northeast of town, and leaves a wife and six daughters to mourn his death."
David and Elizabeth were living on their ranch at Spring Valley, Spokane County, Washington when he died. This is the farm where my father, Waybe Bell was born to Walter Bell and Hattie Coonc Bell in September 1903 and about 1 mile from the one room school house where dad attended and where Earline and I began school.
It seems reasonable to assume that David had been in Bossburg, Wa visiting his daughters Ora and Ella who were living there according to the 1900 census. Ora had married Will Duncan and had Raymond and Howard at that time. Howard later married Francis Riley (my mothers sister). The census indicates Will Duncan was born September 1870 and he, his mother and Father were all born in Missouri. The census reports that Ora was born September 1874, was 23 at the time and had been married 5 years. In addition she had had two children and BOTH were living. This was Raymond, born December 1896 ( born in Idaho) and Howard born in Washington in 1898.
Ella was Ora's sister and had married H.H. Bell (Harry) in 1892. Ella was born July 1872 and was 28 at the time the census was taken. It rteported that she had had 3 children but only 1 was living ( that
