  • ID: I126
  • Name: (Sir) John WHITAKER
  • Sex: M
  • Reference Number: 7340032
  • Note:
    KNIGHTED 1262; CONFIRMER OF THE MAGNA CARTA;
THE WHITAKER FAMILY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST IN LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, THE NAME
DERIVED FROM "HIGH WHITAKER" (ESTATE NAME), NEAR PADIHAM, AND IS BELIEVED TO
BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE MEANING "ONE WHO RESIDED NEAR A WHITE FIELD, OR WHEAT
FIELD." NAME ALSO SPELLED "QUITACRE" AT THE END OF THE 13TH CENTURY, ALSO
"WHITTAKER." FAMILY RESIDENCE (BY 1431) WAS "THE HOLME" (HOLME-IN-CLIVIGER,
BURNLEY, LANCASHIRE), A 4-ROOM MANOR HOUSE, OCCUPIED BY THE WHITAKER FAMILY
UNTIL 1959 (SOLD TO THE ERIC HALSTEAD FAMILY). CURRENTLY (1990) A NURSING
HOME. IN JOHN BURKE'S "ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF HERALDRY, OR GENERAL ARMORY OF
ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, AND IRELAND" (3RD EDITION, 1844), IS FOUND THE FOLLOWING:
"WHITAKER (The Holme, c. Lancaster; derived from Richard Whitaker, of Holme,
esq. living in 1543, great-grandson of Thomas Whitaker, of Holme, A.D. 1431,
now represented by THOMAS HORDERN WHITAKER, of The Holme, esq. son of the
late Rev. Thomas Thoresby Whitaker, A.M. by Jane his wife, eldest dau. of
James Hordern, of Wolverhampton, esq. and grandson of Thomas Dunham Whitaker,
LL.D. the topographical historian, by Lucy his wife, dau. of Thomas Thoresby,
of Leeds, merchant). Sa. three mascles ar. Crest - A cubit arm in armour,
the hand grasping a flaming sword, all ppr."
TWO SEPARATE THEORIES HAVE BEEN ADVANCED FOR THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME WHITAKER.
THE HOME OF CEDRIC, KING OF THE WEST SAXONS AT THE TIME OF KING ARTHUR, WAS
NAMED WITGAR. ONE SCHOOL BELIEVES THE NAME ORIGINTAED FROM THIS LOCATION. AN
ENGLISH WRITER ON THE ORIGIN OF SURNAMES SURMISES THAT THE NAME DERIVED FROM
THE RESIDENCE OF ITS BEARERS AT A PLACE KNOWN AS "THE WHITE ACRE" OR CHALK
FIELD. HE BELIEVES THAT THE GREATER NUMBER OF THE FAMILIES OF THE NAME PROBABLY
TOOK THE COGNOMON FROM THEIR RESIDENCE EITHER AT NATHER OR OVER WHITACRE, IN
WARWICKSHIRE, OR AT WHITTACRE, IN LANCASHIRE.
FAMILIES BEARING THIS NAME WERE IDENTIFIED AS EARLY SETTLERS IN THE ENGLISH
COUNTIES OF LEICESTER, WARWICK, LANCASTER, BEDFORD, NORTHAMPTON, DORSET, YORK,
HEREFORD, WILTS, HERTFORD, KENT, SUFFOLK, AND LONDON. THEY APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN
CHIEFLY OF THE LANDED AND YEOMAN CLASSES.
THE "HISTORY OF THE PARISH OF WHALLEY" LISTS WHITAKER OF SYMONSTONE, WHITAKER
OF BRAODCLOUGH, WHITAKER OF HEALEY, WHITAKER OF HEATHORNE, WHITAKER OF PALERMO,
AND WHITAKER OF HOLME. BURKE'S "LANDED GENTRY" LISTS WHITAKER OF HOLME AND
WHITAKER OF HESLEY HALL. THE HESLEY HALL LINE HAS FIRST NAMES OF ABRAHAM,
ISAAC, JOHN, SARAH, AND HANNA. IT COULD BE PURELY COINCIDENTAL, BUT THESE SAME
FIRST NAMES ARE COMMON IN THE EARLY SHELBY COUNTY WHITAKER LINEAGE. THE HIGH
DEGREE OF SIMILARITY DOES NOT OCCUR IN THE HOLME LINE.
IN EARLY ENGLISH AND AMERICAN RECORDS THE NAME APPEARS IN VARIOUS SPELLINGS OF
WHITACRE, WYTHACRE, WITACRE, WITACUR, WHITACAR, WYTEACRE, WETAKER, WHITTEACRES,
WITTACRE, WITAKER, WITTAKER, WHITEACRE, QUITACRE, WHITAKER, AND MANY OTHERS.
AT THE TIME OF THE DOMESDAY SURVEY OF POSSESSIONS, MADE AT THE ORDER OF WILLIAM
THE CONQUEROR (1066-1087), SIR SIMON DE WHITACRE WAS LISTED AS THE LAND
PROPRIETOR OF WHITACARFIELD IN WARWICKSHIRE. OTHER EARLY RECORDS LIST SIMON DE
WHITACRE OF LEICESTERSHIRE, IN THE TIME OF KING EDWARD I (1272-1307); ALAN
WHITACER OF WHIACUR OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, ABOUT THE SAME TIME; JOHN DE WHITACRE
    OF LANCASHIRE, IN 1317; HENRICUS OR HENRY WYTEACRE OF YORKSHIRE IN 1379;
WILLELMUS OR WILLIAM DE WETAKER OF YORKSHIRE IN 1379; ROGERUS OR ROGER
WHITTEACRES IN THE SAME PLACE AT A SLIGHTLY LATER DATE; RICHARD WHITAKER OF
LANCASHIRE IN 1434; AND HUMPHREY WHITAKER OF LANCASHIRE ABOUT 1516.
