The following two letters were written by George G. Williams, Of
Polo, Ill. to Mary Adelaide McDermott, of Clinton, Mich. asking
for consent to marry her daughter, Mary Catherine McDermott, my
maternal grandmother. Both original letters are in my
possession. Keith Larzelere. Polo Oct. 29-1898 Mrs.
    McDermott Dear Friend
I hope you will excuse this way of making my wants known. I
think Kate has told you that we wer(sic) expecting to be married
this winter. And we would like to have your consent. I will
try and take good care of her, iff(sic) she is a good Girl. I
guess Kate has told your(sic) our plans as far as we know now.
And I hope you will approve of it and give your consent.
We have had the worst weather I ever saw for the last ten days,
rain and snow and lots off(sic) and work is geting (sic) the
start of the farmers. Julia often speaks of you folks, and
wonders iff(sic) you will ever come to Polo. She thinks she
would like to see Myrtie so much. Hoping for a favorable reply
soon. I will close untill(sic) I see you.
    Yours truly George
    G. Williams Polo Nov 12 1898 Mrs. McDermott
Dear Friend Your of the seventh at hand. I was very much
pleased to hear from you. And will say in regard to your wish,
I am not in favor of a wedding. And I liked Kate's plan very
much, but you plan suits me just as well. And iff(sic) that is
your wish, tell Kate I think we had better do that way iff(sic)
it suits you. We have more snow this week and I would not be
surprised(sic) iff (sic) there would be lots of corn stay in the
fields all winter. You have Kate do as you wish about the
    the(sic) mater(sic) and I will be satsfied(sic). I will write
to her soon and tell her what I think of the plan.
    Yours truly Geo
