A Great Loss to the Community
Mrs. Mary Milne, a well known Rockwood citizen died in Guelph Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Milne was noted for her many talents at public speaking and for writing poetry. She was very generous with her talents and spoke at many local and also distant Senior Citizens club meetings. She was particularly active during the Canadian centennial celebrations when her love for her country showed in a multitude of ways. She organized meetings, aranged for special activities for those days, and wrote patriotic poems to emphasize the spirit of the days. Always thoughtful of others she raised funds for seats "so folks could rest on their way up the street."
Mr. and Mrs. Max Milne were formerly from Eden Mills, where they ran the general store until moving to Rockwood. Mr. Milne owned the feed store on Main Street and worked there until his son, James, took over. Mrs. Milne at first worked at the general store in Rockwood, owned by George Lawrence. Later she was active in the many church organizations of the Presbyterian Church.
We have lost a true friend and staunch supporter of worthwhile community efforts.
Mrs. Milne is survived by her husband, William (Max) and her family conisisting of Doris (Jestin), and James, of Rockwood, Wilma (Hunter) of Brantford, William, of Surrey B.C., and the late Ken Milne. She is also survived by one sister Jean Chapman in South Carolina. She was also predeceased by her sister Ethel Craig and her brother Carmen Roberts.
Mrs. Milne is resting at the Shoemaker Funeral Home in Acton, from which she will be buried in the Rockwood Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.
