    MOREHEAD, JOHN MOTLEY, lawyer, legislator, governor, was born July 4, 1796, in Pennsylvania county, Va. He served in the North Carolina legislature, and early became a whig, being a warm friend of Henry Clay. From 1841 till 1845 he was governor of North Carolina. He died Aug. 28, 1866, in Rockbridge, Va.
    Footnote
    John Morehead is said to have been a Scotch emigrant from Pennsylvania. Obedience Motley was the daughter of Joseph Motley, who in 1778 purchased a thousand acres in Pittsylvania County and moved thither from Amelia County. The will of Joseph Motley named wife Elizabeth, sons David,

    Daniel, Samuel, John, daughters Martha Stewart, Obedience Morehead, Sally Anderson, Amey Carter, Delilah Terry, and Grandson Joseph Tanner.

    The study of genealogy, the tracing of families in their movements from one place to another, has shown what great numbers of Pittsyl-vania's inhabitants have gone south and west. John Motley Morehead, governor of North Carolina from 1840-45, was born in Pittsylvania; he was the son of John More-head and his wife Obedience Motley, daughter of Joseph Motley. Gov. Morehead was a man of marked ability and an outstanding figure in the development of his adopted State.
