After graduating from Upper School (Grade 13) at St. Thomas Collegiate, she attended Normal School (Teacher's College) in London. She taught 2 years in Northern Ontario at Dryden and Dorion in the Thunder Bay area. she taught 1 year at Broughdale, a suburb of London. She attended the Toronto Normal School for one year which enabled her to recieve a Permanent First Class Certificate. Upon graduation she was hired by the Toronto Board of Education, and taught there for 3 years until the death of her father. She came back to St. Thomas and taught in a rural school near Shedden. She had started her teaching in the fall of 1928, and the next fall the stock market collapsed, and the Depression set in. She had started her teaching at $900.00 a year and her last teaching job was $500.00 a year. Near the end of her last year, she became ill and had to have an operation and a stay of 6 weeks in the hospital. She was still recuperating at home that summer of 1936, when she got a chance to fill in as a payroll clerk in the office of the Medcalf Shoe Company, where her sister Pearl worked as a stenographer. It was a temporary job that turned into a permanent job for 10 years. The depression finally ended and soon the Second World War started. she had joined the Badminton Club and the Municipal Golf Club. But when the War started, they became very busy.
The girls, Helen and Pearl, belonged to I.O.D.E. in St. Thomas. They soon became involved with volunteer work among the many Air Force Schools surrounding St. Thomas. They took their turn working in the hospitality room in the city, where the young recruits could come in the evening to relax, play cards and read papers and magazines. They also had coffee and homemade pies, tarts, cookies and cakes to serve to them. They chaperoned dances at the Air Force Technical School, just south of the city adn the Bombing School near Fingal. At the same time she was active in the Knox Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School Teacher.
In April of 1947, she resigned from her job because of her upcoming marriage to Harold Pincombe.
After Harold's retirement they travelled to the East Coast, Hawaii and California.
