Sallie Land Humphries filed for divorce on December 18, 1895, in Anniston, AL on the grounds that Marcus was addicted to alcohol. The divorce was granted February 3, 1896. From the depositions taken in the proceeding it was disclosed that Sallie had a brother named Frank who helped support her and who filed the case for her "for ami," and that there was another brother recently deceased from whom she expected to receive a small estate. Sallie states that eldest daughter Lilly is married at this time and living in Paris, TX and daughter Mattie is a stenographer also living in Paris. Immediately after the divorce, Sallie and the other children moved from Anniston to Paris to start a new life.
