    Recorded in Spottsylvania Co.,Va. 1724, Francis Browning Sr,
    deeded 250 acres of land on June 19,1735, a patent of 40 acres
    in St. Marks Parish,County of Orange,Dominion of Virginia was
    granted by George II of Great Britian,France and Ireland to
    FrancisBrowning and John Ashley, in consideration of 40
    shillings.The conditions on which this tract was granted are as
    follows:Yielding and paying unto us, our heirs and successors,
    for every fifty acres of land and so proportionable for a lesser
    or greater quanity than fifty acres, the fee rent of one
    shilling yearly, to be paid upon the feast of St. Michael, he
    archangle, and also cultivating and inproving three acre part of
    every 50 of the tract above mentioned within three years after
    date of these patents.In 1740 he deeded land to his son Francis
    and in 1741 to his brother John. in 1748 more land was deeded to
    his sons, Francis and Nicholas and to his daughters,Mrs.Turner
    and Mrs.Duncan. In 1747, he granted two tracts of 100 acres on
    North Little Fork. In 1753 he bought 100 acres on Middle Run.
    These lands above were known as the Browning District(Genealogy
    of Brownings in America,by E.F.Browning)

    *In Dr. Slaughter's History of St Mark's Parish, Culpepper
    Ciunty, Virginia, he indicates that Francis Browning settled
    near Gaines Cross Roads, which in now Rappahannock, Virginia.
    Thomas Browning had come with him but hereturned to Caroline Co.
    Va.

    **Francis Browning Sr. recieved a grant of land in Caroline
    County in June of 1735(some sources say he was born 1686
    St.Annes Parish,Essex Co. Va) Others say he was born about 1690.
    It is known that he married Elizabeth Lloyd, but records of
    Essex Co. also show a wife named Rachel.Evidently married twice.
  • Note:
    **In 1833, a part of Culpepper County became Rappahannock
    County, Virginia. The lands patented as above, stated,
    afterwards were known as the Browning district. They were
    located at the headwaters of Battle Run, and the northside of
    Gourdvine Creek, branches of the Rappanhannock River.

    **Some say that Mr Francis Browning Sr. was born in the year
    1686 and that his father was married in 1685 instead of 1675.
    Mr. Francis Sr. deeded land in 1740 to his son Francis Jr, and
    in 1741 to his brother John, in 1748 to his sons Francis Jr, and
    Nicholas and to his daughters Mrs. Turner and Mrs, Duncan. In
    1747 he was granted two tracts of 100 acres and 430 acres,
    respectively, in North Little Fork, and in 1753 he bought 100
    acres on the Middle Run, Culpepper County, Va.

    verify the fact that Francis Browning lived in the same
    locality, and his deeds and records changed as the county name

    Acknowledged 2 Jun 1724. Francis is living in St Anne's Parish
    and makes a sale of land in Spotsylvania County. This deed is
    signed by his wife MARY who acknowledges all her dower rights

    Willis, and Francis Browning is listed a planter of St. Mark's
    Parish in Orange County.
