  • ID: I16765
  • Name: Aert Jacobsen VAN WAGENEN
  • Sex: M
  • Death: BEF. 1667
  • Note:
Aert, or Aart Jacobsen, the ancestor of all the families mentioned in the
earliest town and church records of Ulster and Dutchess Counties in New
York State, under the name of Van Wageningen and Van Wagenen, came from
Wageningen, a town near the Rhine, ten miles west of Arnheim in
Guelderland. His children, in accordance with the custom of the early
Dutch settlers in America, adopted the name of that town as a family
name. The date of Aert Jacobsen's arrival from Holland is uncertain, but
    it was probably about 1650.

    THE FIRST GENERATION IN AMERICA

(1001) Aert Jacobsen came to Rensselaerwyck with Evert Pels, a brewer, of
Steltyn, who lived at the Mill Creek in Greenbos (Greenbush). The records
of the Dutch Church at Albany prior to 1683 having been lost, there is
little information to be had about Aert Jacobsen or his family during
their residence in Rensselaerwyck (Albany), but after their removal to
Kingston in 1660, the record is quite complete. Aert Jacobsen took the
oath of allegiance to the Patroon on November 23, 1651. On September 18,
1660, he purchased a piece of land in Esopus containing 47 morgens (94
acres), 215 rods for 600 guilders (240 dollars), half in beaver and half
in wheat at market prices. His wife's name was Annatje Gerrits, (many of
her descendants took the name Gerrit as a Christian, or first name). They
were both received as members of the Dutch Church at Kingston on June 24,
1661. At an election held March 31, 1664 for delegates to be sent from
Wiltwick (Kingston) to the Manhattans (New York) to a General Assembly,
Aert Jacobsen and Evert Pels signed as voters. Aert Jacobsen died before
1667, as his daughter Neltje married in that year and is recorded as the
daughter of Aert Jacobsen, deceased. On May 15, 1672, his widow was
assessed for repairing the Stockade at Kingston.
