Grace Gwendolin Shaw passed away in Fortuna on May 25, 2005, after a long and giving life. She was affectionately known as G.G. to old friends and family members.
She was born in Ferndale on May Day in 1913 to John David Shaw and Blanch Amelia Robarts Shaw. She was 8 years old when her mother died, and with help of family and friends she “raised” her father until he remarried Gertrude Hacket Shaw, who was a wonderful stepmother to Grace.
She leaves her cousins, Blanche Grinsell, Joyce Echevarria and John Shaw as well as other relatives. Grace leaves her very close and dear friend, Ruth Mumford.
Grace was a descendant of the Francis Francis family who were among the first settlers in Ferndale, and the Shaw family of Elk River. Grace grew up in Ferndale where she attended Ferndale Elementary and High Schools. She also attended Humboldt State and was a graduate of U.C. Berkeley with a B.A. and teaching credential. She started her teaching career at the Table Bluff School with most of her teaching years with the Los Altos School District, retiring in 1967.
Upon her retirement, Grace moved back to Ferndale where she joined her father and stepmother in the home that was given to her by her grandmother Anatia Grace Robarts. She had a happy last year with her father and upon his death, she and her stepmother, Gertrude, continued to reside at 400 Eugene Street.
Grace was on the Cradle Roll of the Ferndale Congregational Church, where she was baptized on January 1, 1914. Upon her return to Ferndale, Grace gave a lot to her church during her retirement years by holding the offices of Clerk and Sunday School Superintendent. She was a teacher, kitchen organizer, altar guild member, giving teas, providing flowers, working on bazaars, helping in every way she could as the church evolved.
Ferndale history was extremely important to Grace, she was instrumental in the founding of the Ferndale Museum, where she served on the board of directors for a number of years and served as membership chairman. She and Gertrude were docents together for many years, Grace continuing after Gertrude’s death. Grace was a longtime member and Past President of the Ferndale Garden Club. She enjoyed sharing her flowers in the club’s display exhibit at the Humboldt County Fair. She was a longtime member of the California Retired Teachers Association. Grace had a kind heart and gave support to many individuals and associations during her lifetime.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate her life at the Ferndale Community Church, 712 Main Street on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Sayer officiating.
Interment will be in the Brice/Robarts family lot in the Ferndale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ferndale Community Church, P.O. Box 367; Ferndale Museum, P.O. Box 431; Ferndale Garden Club, P.O. Box 1042, Ferndale, CA 95536 or donor’s favorite charity.
