  • Census: 1880 Jefferson Twp, Ross, Oh
  • Note:
1880 census Jefferson, Ross, OH: George Coon, aged 70, bp OH, both parents PA; wife Harriet, aged 36, bp VA, both parents VA; Margret aged 8, Albert aged 5 and Minnie B. aged 2 years. According to the census, both parents of the three children listed were born OH, not VA.

In 1885 Harriet E. Coon (George's second wife) was made guardian of Minnie Bell Coon, born 26 Dec. 1877, and Clarence E. Coon, born 10 Aug. 1884, "minor children of George Coon." (Ross Co., Ohio Probate #1838) Regarding this probate, why aren't Margaret aged 12 and Albert aged 9 referenced. These children have been attributed to George and Harriet by Frances McTeer and others.

There is a marriage record in Ross County, OH for George Coon and Hariet E. Weinrich on January 18, 1877. Others have him married to Harriet E. Rawlston, b. 1843 in Pennsylvania; the Harriet in the 1880 census was born VA, both parents VA.

The parentage of Margaret and Albert is in question. They are most likely Harriet's children by a previous marriage to Weinrich. Albert, however, uses the name Coon.

1900 census Jefferson, Ross, OH: Harriet E. Coon, aged 57, born May 1843, widow, four children w/ three living, bp PA, both parents PA; son Clarence A. aged 15, born Aug 1884, bp OH, both parents PA; brother Harvey Ralston, aged 46, born Jun 1853, widowed, bp PA, both parents PA.

Harriet Coon is the only Coon buried in the Caldwell Cemetery. I do not know her maiden name; some say it is Rawlston or Ralston. The 1900 census supports the name Ralston. There are Weinrichs buried in Caldwell Cemetery, however, they are a generation younger - Fred b. 1875, and Maggie b. 1871. We find Albert J. Coon living next door to Fred Weinrich in the 1910 census of Jefferson, Ross, OH.
