He was instrumental in opposing Argyll's invasion in 1685. K.T. 29 May 1687, being one of the original Knights on the revival of that order by James II. In the Revolution, shortly afterwards, he played a trimming and shuffling part. He marrried, 5 May 1659, Amelia Sophia, daughter and, in her issue, sole heir of James (STANLEY), 7th EARL OF DERBY and 1st LORD STRANGE, by Charlotte, daughter of Claude DE LA TREMOILLE, DUKE OF THOUARS, in Poitou. She died 22 February 1702/3, and was buried at Dunkeld, co. Perth. He died 6, and was buried 17 May 1703, also at Dunkeld.
[CP 1:316](d) If Lord Macaulay's superlatives are to be accepted, he was "the falsest, the most fickle, the most pusillanimous of mankind." Had he been more atctively disloyal to James, no doubt this unfavorable opinion would have been modified. V.G.
