    JOHN (MURRAY), MARRQUESS OF ATHOLL, &c. [SCT], son and heir, born 24 February 1659/60, at Knowsley, co. Lancaster, the seat of his maternl uncle, Charles (Stanley], 8th Earl of Derby. Being blind of one eye, he was known as "Ian Cam." He, having been a zealous supporter of William III, as one of the Principal Secretaries of State [Scotland], &c., was in his father's lifetime created, by patent dated 27 July 1696 (at the Castle of Atre, a league S.E. of Ath, in Hainault), EARL OF TULLIBARDIN, VISCOUNT GLENALMOND, and LORD MURRAY [Scotland] for life. He was High Commissioner to the Parliament [Scotland] 1696-98. Chancellor of St. Andrew's University 1697-1724. Having been P.C. [Scotland] to William III, he was reappointed on the accession of Anne, and was made LORD PRIVY SEAL [Scotland] in April 1703, a month before he succeeded to his father's honours. On 30 June 1703 (a month after succeeding to the Marquessate, &c.), he was created DUKE OF ATHOLL, MARQUESS OF TILLIBARDIN, EARL OF STRATHTAY AND STRATHHARDLE, VISCOUNT OF BALWHIDDER, GLENALMOND AND GLENLYON, AND LORD MURRAY, BALVENIE, AND GASK, all in the co. of Perth [Scotland.], with a spec. rem., failing the heirs male of his own body to those of his father. K.T. 7 February 1703/4. In 1705 he resigned his office of Privy Seal, and warmly opposed the Union of Scotland with England. Having joined the Tory party, he was elected a Rep. Peer [Scotland] in 1710 and (again) 1713; Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland 1712 to 1714; an Extraordinary Lord of Session 7 Nov. 1712 till death. P.C. [G.B.] 17 April 1712 till September 1714. PRIVY SEAL [Scotland] (for 2nd time) 1713 to 1714, Lord Lieutenant of co. Perth 1715 till death. His then eldest son and heir apparent being attainted for high treason in that year, he procured an act of Parliament (I Geo. I) for vesting his honours and estates, aftcr his death, in his next surviving son, James Murray. He married, 1stly, 24 May 1683, (contract dated 24 April 1683) Katharine, 2nd daughter of William (DOUGLAS, afterwards HAMILTON), DUKE OF HAMILTON [Scotland], by Anne, suo jure, DUCHESS OF HAMILTON [Scotland]. She, who was baptised at Hamilton, 24 October 1662, died and was buried there 17 January 1707. Funeral entry at Lyon office. He married 2ndly, (contract dated 26 June 1710) in 1710, Mary, 2nd daughter of William (Ross), LORD Ross [Scotland], by Agnes, daughter and heir of Sir John WILKIE. He died at Huntingtower, co. Perth, in his 65th year, 14, and was buried 26 November 1724, at Dunkeld. Funeral entry at Lyon office. On his death the titles conferred on him in 1696, being for life, became extinct. His widow, who was born 18 July 1687, died 17 January 1767, at Huntingtower, having survived him 42 years, and was buried with him.
