    Loyalist and friend of Montrose.
Had the misfortune, soon after his marriage to be bitten by a swine on his knee, and his lady who liked gadeing about and had an expensive turn, persuaded him for his cure to go to the wells of Germany. They stayed there a year or two with a brother of his, a merchant, and by his wife?s expensive turn, brought the estate under a great deal of debt.
    (MS History of the Skenes)
Where did they go in Germany?
Aachen became attractive as a spa by the middle of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 17th century Bad Liebenstein became a truly fashionable resort.
Is he the James Skene who portrait by Anthony van Dyck (or in manner of) is at Mar Lodge?
James Skene's black doublet with slashed sleeves, elaborate lace collar and loose, long hair shows him to be a fashionable young man, following the pre-Civil War court style. The artist has been influenced by the portraits of the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck, the official portraitist to Charles I and his wife, Henrietta Maria.
