    26 Feb 1679/80: ?Lady Clifton died last Tuesday, her eldest daughter being married without her consent to Sir John Parsons of Buckingham of not above 400l a year.?

    Chancery case Michaelmas term 1673:
    The Lady Frances Clifton, surviving Executrix of Sir Clifford Clifton, and William Clifton, an Infant, Son and Heir of the said Sir Clifford, Plaintiffs.
    Will of Dame Frances, widow of Sir Clifford Clifton of Clifton (Nt.). Dated 6 Feb. 1679/80; codicil 23 Feb. 1679/80.
    To be buried privately in vault at Clifton. Hen., Duke of Newcastle, to be guardian of s. Sir Wm.; requests Sam. Graves may remain as bailiff, to give Duke less trouble, Graves having 40 p.a. salary and allowance for horses.
    Countess of Alisbury to be guardian of ds. Katherine and Arabella. Hopes servant Gabriella Graves may live with Katherine all the days of her life; having 20 p.a. If she does not want to, or dies, to be replaced by someone near 40 yrs. Servant Mary Hare to continue with Arabella, 10 p.a. Ds. only other servants to be a wash maid and a foot boy.
    To son, lease of house in Bloomsbury which is to be let furnished till he is of age; also 2 silver candlesconces and warming pan, silver skellett and cover, silver ladle, silver coffee pot, 6 silver plates without coat of arms, silver spout and silver piece bason, 3 silver tankards, one with German work with a lion on it, and 2 plain, gilt cup and cover, silver cullender, silver pint pot, small silver caster, agate cup and cover, nuttshell and cover set with stone, silver sugar box, silver porringer, 4 silver forks and a spoon, a marrow picker, diamond knott and pendant, topaze, and ruby ring set in claws without foil.
    To servants, yr.'s wages and mourning.
    To 2 footboys Jas. Davie and Sam. Lovett, that have no wages, 50s. each.
    No mourning or legacy to John Jenkine, Rob. Browne, Thos. Basseldine or Gervas Aram, "as none of my proper domestick servants to whome I pay wages on my owne account."
    To Gabriella Graves, all clothes.
    To d. Katherine's maid, Susanna Parry, 5, as at testator's death she is to leave and to return home to her father.
    To servant Eliz. Hardy, 5, as she to return to father likewise.
    To Dr. Sharpe, minister of St. Giles in the Fields, and to Clifford Thirlby, minister of Clifton, 10 each. To poor of these parishes and of Kinolton, 5 each place.
    To nephew Wm. Finch, esq., 100 pieces of broad gold, 20s. a piece, of coin of Charles I. He, Duke of Newcastle and 2 ds. to be executors.
    All residue to ds., but not a penny to either of them if they marry without the consent of Earl of Conway and his 3 eldest sons, Daniel, Heneage and Wm., or if they marry a Scotchman, Irishman or Welshman; in which case, residue to s. Wm.
    From 200 each d. to have for maintenance and from proceeds of mortgage money, executors to see Lady Alisbury amply satisfied for her trouble and for their table.
    To further her most desired marriage between s. Wm. and Katherine Cavendish, d. of Duke of Newcastle, executors to secure to K. 2000 in case Wm. die before 21; but at 21 he to receive his portion and she to have jointure of 1500 p.a.
    To Dr. John Troutbeck, 100 and to his bro. Jos. T., 50; these to have the lapping up of her body in cerecloth, for which they are to be paid.
    Hopes Ralph Staunton, her son's tutor, may stay with him till 21, Newcastle giving him 40 p.a.; and hopes her son will befriend him for life.
    Codicil. d. Katherine has married Sir John Parsons; now s. Wm. and Wm. Finch to hold all monies bequeathed for these for life, then for children.
    If Newcastle refuses to be executor, Daniel Finch, esq., appointed till s. Wm. 21.
