  • ID: I13225
  • Name: Joan Devereux
  • Suffix: LG
  • Sex: F
  • Death: 10 MAY 1409
  • MEM: Little Dunmow, Essex; Priory church: effigy (incorrectly said to be Maid Marian)
  • Note:

Joan, Lady Fitzwalter. Daughter of John, Lord Devereux, K.G. Married 1st Sir Walter Fitzwalter, afterwards Lord Fitzwalter; 2ndly as his third wife, Hugh, 2nd Lord Burnell, K.G.
Made a Lady of the Garter 1390.
Only the Lady Chapel of the Priory Church of Little Dunmow can be seen and is now the Parish Church. On the right facing the altar is an effigy of Joan Devereux d.1409. But legend has taken over from history-Joan has been forgotten and the tomb is now said to be that of Matilda the Fair or Maid Marian!
