Name: Elizabeth De Criol
Change Date: 2 MAY 2013
John Pabenham's son and heir, John, was said to be aged 40 in 1322, after his father's death [Cal. Inq. p.m. vol.6, no 311], which would place his birth round 1280 or earlier. That would seem to be too early for his mother to be a daughter of Margery Clifford by Nicholas de Criol, but the problem is that it's not clear whether Elizabeth was his mother or not. Margery Clifford's lands seem to have passed to a younger son Thomas Pabenham, but then, so did the manor of Pavenham itself. The Victoria County History of Bedfordshire [vol.3, p.85] suggests that John Pabenham had married, before 1298, a daughter of Nicholas (or John?) Croyser.
Perhaps a closer study of the Pabenhams would clarify the matter, but at the moment it doesn't seem clear who was the father of Margery Clifford's daughters.
