Sir Robert Ogle being annoyed that the barony of Bopthal had been bestowed upon his younger brother John Bertram, on the day after the death of his father, went with 200 armed men , archers and soilders to the castle. After a four day long battle that included escales, pavises hurdises and other ordnace of war, they took posession of it. John Bertram petitioned the House of Commons to make a request to the king to reinstated the property. It was reinstated a month later.
In 1419, the Castle of Wark, being in Robert's charge, was taken by the Scots, and put to the sword. But it was retaken by Robert who led a party into the castle by means of a drain and the Scots were put to death for their cruelty to the English. The Scottish account says this was an act of treachery, for while they were treating for peace, ladders were placed at the back of the castle by which Sir Ogle and his men entered and killed 23 Scottish noblemen.
