Born before his parents married, it seems.
Succeeed at Aldford and Elford, but the legitimate Ardens kept Alvanley.
The Arderne Tomb (circa 1400) at Elford is ranked by many as one of the finest of the period. It shows Sir Thomas de Arderne (d. 1391) in a fine suit of contemporary armour, joining hands with his wife Matilda, the heiress of Sir Richard Stafford of Pipe and Clifton Campville.
Sir Thomas, Lord of Elford, rebuilt the church replacing most of its Norman architecture. As a knight, he accompanied the Black Prince into Spain during the 100 years war and was with the army that distinguished itself at Poitiers.
