Eustace FitzJohn was succeeded by his son William who, as the greater part of his possessions had descended to him through his mother, took the name of de Vescy. In 1172 Alnwick was besieged by William the Lion, King of Scotland, but was successfully defended by William de Vescy, an illegitimate son of the Baron of Alnwick. In 1174, the Scottish King again besieged Alnwick and on this occasion, he only retained a force of 500 men with him while the rest dispersed to harry the countryside. One of their exploits was the massacre of 300 persons who had taken refuge in the church at Warkworth. An English force, advancing from Newcastle, came upon William at daybreak in his camp at Alnwick and, aided by thick fog, surprised him and took him prisoner. This happened on the very day that the English King, Henry II, submitted himself to be flogged by the monks of Canterbury for his part in the murder of Thomas a Becket, Archibishop of Canterbury. The King attributed his good fortune to the saint's intervention.
A stone close to Forest Lodge, the main entrance to Hulne Park, about half a mile west of the Castle, marks the spot where the King was captured.
