Gambuston in Chittlehampton, Devon, was the original home of the Gambon family, from whom it takes its name, but they moved at an early date to Moorstone in Halberton.
(Rev JHB Andrews, Chittlehampton Parish Magazine)
Moorstone, or Lynor, or Moreston, in Halberton parish and Halberton hundred: In 1242 Geoffrey Gamboun or Gambon was in possession of half a fee of the honour of Gloucester. In 1285 Walter de Gambon was lord of the manor. In the reign of Edward IV the Gambon co heiresses married into the families of Sydenham and Woobearne. Moorstone was inherited by Sydenham, whose granddau married into the Wyndham family. Lyson describes it as an estate in the hands of Hon Percy Wyndham in 1822, and the Countess of Egremont was in possession in 1850. The medieval manor house of the Gambon family survies at Moorstone Barton (Pevsner p 467).
The manor of Morston belonged anciently to the family of De Morston, afterwards, for eight descents, to that of Gambon, whose co-heiresses in the reign of Edward IV. married Sydenham and Woolbearne. This estate was inherited by Sydenham, whose grand-daughter brought it to Wyndham.
The home of the Gambons before Moorstone was Gambuston, in Chittlehampton. Papers relating to it are in the Wyndham papers in Shire Hall in Taunton (Chittlehampton Chronicle Nov 1955)
