He lived in a small cottage until the Restoration, but although the Scottish estates were then recovered, they were heavily burdened with debt and fines incurred by the family?s support of the King.
To pay off the the debts his son the 22nd Earl sold a large part of the lands, including the barony of Erskine, the family?s original home, but the situation was worsened when he was ordered to resist the Highland rebellion of 1688 and in consequence his castles at Braemar, Corgarf and Kildrummie were very badly damaged with fire.
