The first of the O'Beolan Earls was Fearcher MacinTagart, grandson of Gillianrias, and son of the 'sagart', or hereditary abbot at the monastery of Applecross founded by St. Maelrubha in the seventh century .
Fearchar, of the O'Beolan line in Wester Ross apparently earned his right to the lapsed title of Earl in 1234 through his mother (in the old Pictish tradition which was retained as the rule for Scottish dignities).
In 1215 Fearchar Mac an t'Sagairt was made a Norman knight for his services during further trouble in the north with rebels led by Donald Bane, another son of Donald MacWilliam.
By 1226 Fearchar Mac an t'Sagairt inherited the title, Earl of Ross, from Malcolm Macbeth through the female line to the O'Beolan hereditary Abbott of Applecross.
FERQUHARD mac an t-sagairt (?son of the priest?) descended of the lay abbots of Applecross, helped ALEXANDER II (1214?49) crush a rebellion in Moray and Ross, brought the king the heads of the rebel leaders and was knighted 15 June 1215; cr EARL OF ROSS by 24 Dec 1225,
and d c 1251, having had, with a s (Malcolm) and two daus (Euphemia, m Walter de Moravia, Lord of Duffus; Christina, m OLAV, KING OF MAN AND THE ISLES), William2nd Earl of Ross, Justiciar of Scotland N of the Forth.
