    The English ancestor of the Whitmores is traced to De Boteral of Staffordshire, Eng., in 1100. His grandson, Ralph, married Avisia de Whitmore, and his grandson John became Sir John de Whitmore.
    The De Botrells (of Boscastle in the 12th & 13th centuries) were believed to be the progenitors of the Whitmore family when a William de Botrell married, circa 1170, a Saxon heiress Avisa de Whitmore of Whitmore, Staffordshire.
