Name: Eleanor de Vitre
Death: ABT 1233
Burial: Abbey of Mondaye, Bayeux, France
Change Date: 8 JUL 2011
Married Gilbert de Malesmains by 1198, when he "was holding in her right both her inheritance and her dower." CP 11:379, citing Book of Fees, p. 11, Rot. Lit. Claus. 1:37 and Rot. Normanniae, pp. 129, 130. Given that one usually waited a period after the death of a spouse before remarrying, it would leave little space between 1196 and 1198 for a marriage to Gilbert Crespin, lord of Tilliers.
If Eleanor de Vitre was married c. 1185 to William, Earl of Salisbury, when did she marry Gilbert de Tillieres? This question deserves further study. The answer may involve a hitherto undetected divorce between Eleanor de Vitre and William, Earl of Salisbury.?
Gilbert Tillieres's wife was Eleanor, the daughter of Robert de Vitre and widow of William Paynell, who died in 1184. Eleanor married thirdly William FitzPatrick, Earl of Salisbury, who died 1196, by whom she was the mother of Ela, Count of Salisbury, who married William Longespee. Eleanor's fourth husband was Gilbert Malains, who was serving overseas with the English forces in 1199 and 1203 but in 1205 had transfered his allegiance to France. He has incorrectly been called the father of Nicholas I Malmains, but his place in the pedigree is obscure.
It does not appear that she had children by her last marriage, to Gilbert Malesmains.
